Ann Elizabeth Montgomery Using Downloadable Songs From Apple iTunes as a Novel Incentive for College Students Participating in a Web-Based Follow-up Survey
American Journal of Health Promotion Sept/Oct 2010  V25, I1, 2-11
Ann Elizabeth Montgomery, PhD, MPA, MSSW
School of Social Policy and Practice, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia

The purpose of this study was to compare the impact of offering two versus four downloadable songs on response rates to a Web-based survey. One hundred and thirty-eight undergraduate university students after participation in a sexual health workshop were invited to complete a Web-based posttest. The initial incentive to complete the posttest was two downloadable songs and the incentive was increased to four songs midway through data collection. Response rates were monitored to assess the impact of varying incentive levels on study attrition. Increasing incentives from two to four songs significantly improved response rates. Downloadable songs could become a mainstream incentive in Web-based research with young adults.

Donna Metz, PhD Development, Reliability, and Validity of an Urban Trail Use Survey
American Journal of Health Promotion July/August 2010  V24, I6, e1
Donna Spruijt-Metz, PhD,
Associate Professor of Research, Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California

Describes the development and testing of the psychometric characteristics of the Research on Urban Trail Environments (ROUTES) trail use questionnaire, which asks questions about urban trail use, frequency of use, activities done on the trail reasons for using the trail, method of getting to the trail and the like.   Study 1 evaluated the test-retest reliability of the questionnaire, whereas Study 2 assessed its validity by comparing reported trail use to the self-reported and objectively measured physical activity levels.  The sample populations were adults living near urban trails.  The ROUTES questionnaire demonstrated good reliability and validity.
